WORKOUT 7-12-2010

On a very foggy Monday morning, July 12, 2010, shortly before 6:00 am, Rachel Alexandra worked six furlongs in 1:12.45 over a fast track at the Oklahoma training track near Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga, New York. With jockey Shaun Bridgmohan aboard she set fractional times of 13.20 for the first furlong, :36.40 for 3 furlongs, :48 for the half mile, then galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25.80 and went a mile in 1:38.40, according to the Saratoga clocker.

Her trainer Steve Asmussen said of her morning exercise, "She's Rachel, she's incredible."

It was a very misty foggy morning. The half-mile pole was totally blanketed by fog. Her workout was very difficult to see, much to the dismay of a dozen or so fans who lined the rail to take pictures or videos or her.

  1. Pixie,

Love the videos. She almost looks like she floats over the track. I have a question....it was noted that they are galloping her 1 1/2 miles daily. Do you know if this distance was part of her routine last year or if they might be working toward the 1 1/4 races?

  2. Hi Pixie.

Glad to see the latest posting. Awesome videos. Love the music--it suits her. I was having Rachel Super Filly withdrawal symptoms since your last post...

  4. @rachel fan: Most horses will jog/gallop 1-2 miles a day for exercise. It doesn't have to do with the distance of their next races. They then get a bath and cool down /dry off walk and usually go back to the stall.

  5. Dear Pixie: What is the music used for the second video? The one of her Workout Today?

  8. Love this website! How does a person manage to see Rachel in a workout? I'm willing to drive to Saratoga from Ohio for that chance, but is this even an option? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  9. @Bobbystrel: You just go there at or before 5:00am on Monday mornings and wait trackside with your camera. She works out EARLY!!! And there are other horses that work out there that look similar so you'd better be able to identify Rachel on site or you might miss her. Every track is different though, so you might want to call Saratoga ahead of time to make sure.

  10. Pixie: Thanks so much for the advise. I'll make some calls, fingers crossed. Certainly I will be able to recognize her, even in the wee hours of the morning.
