What's up with Rachel?

Lately, there seems to be a lot of questions surrounding our dear Rachel.

Up until La Troienne, the internet was covered with articles about Rachel Alexandra: her schooling, her workouts, her preparations for the next race, down to details as to whether or not she is eating all her meals. Now? -- Hardly anything. Why is it that suddenly there is markedly less published about last year's horse of the year? Now this is the Horse of the Year, folks -- the one who broke all sorts of records last year, the one many have compared with Ruffian. Sure she lost a few races, but I find it odd that lately she is almost totally ignored.

Now newer puzzling developments are unfolding...

In the first workout after La Troienne, the usual exercise rider Dominic Terry was surprisingly absent. Instead, jockey Shaun Bridgmohan rode Rachel during her Monday morning workout. Later it was revealed that Dominic Terry was let go, and has since been hired by Dallas Stewart. Some speculate that this change was because he, as the exercise rider, was responsible for making sure Rachel is accustomed to changing leads immediately after the final turn, which she noticeably failed to to do in La Troienne, an error that some have blamed for her loss. Nobody knows for sure why Dominic Terry is no longer riding Rachel because there has been nothing publicly stated. That's fine, but ...

Shaun Bridgmohan is from Jamaica

Who is this Shaun Bridgmohan? Yes, he is a jockey, and was the the winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 1998. He is a moderately successful jockey, twice winning 6 races on a single card, and winning several well known races including the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2002, the Pimlico Special in 2008, and the Cigar Mile Handicap in 2009. But why is he on Rachel now? Is he just the new exercise rider for Rachel or is he more than that? There may be speculation that he will be the new jockey for Rachel. This speculation is most likely untrue. On one hand, Asmussen and Bridgmohan have had a long history together, and Asmussen has used Bridgmohan on more and more of his horses. But on the other hand, I would imagine that Asmussen would prefer a higher profile jockey such as Robby Albarado (over Bridgmohan) for such a high profile horse as Rachel. Also, it's unlikely Jess Jackson, with the money and flash that he has, would allow anyone other than a high profile - high caliber jockey (such as Calvin) to ride Rachel.

Also, curiouser and curiouser are the times posted for Rachel Alexandra's workouts. In her first workout after La Troienne, she clocked a tepid 0:52 (DRF) or 0:50 (Churchill). Now which one is it: 0:50 or 0:52? Why is there such a big discrepancy between the DRF clockers and the Churchill Downs clockers? Are these people even awake? Two seconds is a huge difference, especially clocking racehorses when accuracy is so important that time is traditionally calculated down to a fifth of a second. In her second workout this past week, she clocked five furlongs in a lukewarm 1:04.20 over a sloppy track. Remember that Rachel loves the slop so it came as a surprise she was that slow. In fact she ranked 12th out of 13 horses at that distance. I looked at the statistics for the other horses, and she was actually tied for last with another horse. Did Asmussen change his training technique? Or the unthinkable -- is there something physically (or emotionally) wrong with our dear Rachel? Let's hope not. Hopefully she's happy and healthy.

So far Rachel's going-ons is shrouded in mystery. If you follow Rachel closely like I do, you might be just as frustrated as I am! We hope we can get some answers soon.

  4. Dear Pixie Poet: I agree that there is much mystery surrounding our dear girl. I search daily for information about her and see nothing. If it weren't for your blog, there would be no information at all. I think that Asmussen has screwed up badly with her post-Woodward regimen and training. I am disheartened to hear from you about her latest workout times. Please keep all of us posted about her progress as much as you can find out. Thank you for all that you do with this blog.

  5. I will follow her to retirement and I will be a fan, even if she runs LAST (hypothetical!), because she was a dream, a fantastic 3 y/o athlete, a horse with a wonderful, feminine charisma. Maybe Thoroughbred trainers could take a hint from endurance horse riders on how to train for stamina...

  8. You can't put a lot of stock into a horse's published workouts. Last year before The Haskell Rachel posted a VERY modest 6 furlong workout and won the race by 6 lengths. A few weeks ago, she posted a bullet workout and lost. Lookin' at Lucky posted a SLOW workout 4 weeks ago and then won the Preakness. Everyone seems to be pushing the panic button now. Relax. Steve Asmussen is the best trainer in the business. Believe it or not, he knows what he is doing. He'll get her back. Chill and watch.

  9. Pixie, I'm glad you wrote this because you brought out what we're all thinking. I also wanted to ask you if you think they'll replace Calvin Borel. I bet they do. They were not happy with his ride last time and Jackson said he was not happy with her being taken wide again on the first turn. It does seem to me, though, that team Rachel is not thinking retirement, at least not yet. I think Jackson's competitive juices are going. Whether what they are doing is the right thing or not, it's hard to say, but changes being made indicates to me that retirement is not in their plans.

  10. @mvlach77.
There is very little chance they will retire Rachel, barring any injuires of course. She has been performing pretty well for a horse that hadn't raced in half a year.
As to replacing Calvin Borel, they'd have to be out of their minds to replace him ... and I don't think they are out of their minds, at least not yet. Calvin has proven (by his 3 out of the past 4 years winning the Kentucky Derby) that he is not only a good rider, but a great one. I was only speculating of the very tiny chance that it could possibly happen, although I seriously doubt it will. If they ever did replace Calvin, they would more likely put Robby Albarado in over Shaun Bridgmohan as he has had more experience and success as a jockey. I'm not saying they will, though, since Calvin has a proven track record with Rachel.

  11. I think it would be crazy to change the jockey. Borel was the jockey when she was with Wiggins, who was undefeated with Rachel. The X factor that has changed with Rachel was her owners and trainers. Not to be down on Asmussen, but maybe he should give Wiggins a call, and see if there is anything Wiggins might know or have advice about. If they change Borel, I think it would be because they are desperate, and don't want to admit to themselves they have screwed her up. I think, Riverhightsfangirl has a point....they need to be also training for endurance, maybe change things up a little. I never understood why they don't utilize other training plans more. Like water treadmills, or even trotting and hacking up and downhills. I know they are race horses, but I think it would be good for body and mind to get out of that stall more than just once a week. Get a good partner to work with. I kinda wonder if her heart is a little broken and confidence is shot losing those last 2 races. Might do her some good to win some matchups in training. Just my novice thoughts.

  12. I have been an Asmussen fan for quite a few years. I'm a bit disheartened with him right now, but I still believe Steve is one of the best trainers in horse racing. As far as putting Shawn on Rachel for her workouts - that absolutely shocked me. I don't know what to think about it. I love Rachel very much and hope to see her back in "racing shape" soon. The timed work outs I've been receiving in my inbox are not nearly as fast since she's been with Shawn, in comparison to her times with Dominic. I don't think Asmussen would ever take Calvin off Rachel.

Thanks for the great blog Pixie!

  13. Calvin has done wonderfully for Rachel! Lisa is just ecstatic and goes into details about their bond (Calvin and Rachel, not her and Calvin :p)

  14. Just to clarify, I hope they keep Calvin on Rachel. But if you watch the interview Jackson did after the race you could tell he was not happy with the ride. If they're doing a total 'start over' from scratch, getting a new rider would not surprise me (although I hope it doesn't happen). Getting rid of Dominic Terry was a shocker to me, so who knows. When listening to Asmussen after the race, he was focused on getting her explosiveness back. I'm not sure how you work on that but I bet that's where their focus is.

  15. Talking about the bond between Calvin and Rachel (which is one thing I believe is very important - and touching) only makes me worry Asmussen and Jackson will replace her jockey. Dom Terry I believe loved Rachel - and they threw him out. I increasingly get the feeling that Asmussen and Blasi treat Rachel as if she were a machine - not a fine, intelligent animal who needs to bond and feel happy, safe and loved.
