WORKOUT 9-20-2010

On Monday morning, September 20, 2010, shortly after 6:00 am, Rachel Alexandra ran six furlongs in 1:12.05 over a fast track at the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga, New York. Exercise rider Dominic Terry rode her handily at that distance. It was the fastest of two works at the distance.

  1. A change of jockey I think is needed. RA does not seem to respond well with the whip and wants simple hand riding and encouraging. Strategic positioning is important and depending on the actual length of the race, strategies may change. For longer races (1 1/8 miles and beyond) a stalking position I think is better while for shorter races, she may opt to take the lead and stay in front all the way.

  2. I agree about the whipping. In all the races where she was whipped, she BARELY won (1 length or shorter). The races where she wasn't touched...6-20 length wins.

I also think that Borel pretty much trained her to gear down in the stretch. She knows (from almost all her races) that when she turns for home Calvin stops riding her. So...yeah. She's been trained to slow down in the stretch.
That's why jockeys should always ride a horse until the end. Regardless of if the horse is multiple lengths in the lead.

  3. Hi Miss Pixie!

It is I, Sharon! Lol! You are a sweetheart, we miss you but we all want you to get better!

Jeanetta, I'm sorry that makes no sense. You think the leading trainer in the country, Steve Asmussen, is training his horses to stop running in the stretch? I would guess he wouldn't be leading trainer if he did that! Calvin rides on the instructions of the trainer, always! Asmussen is well known for taking jockeys off his horses that don't follow instructions. Calvin is doing what he's told to stay on Rachel.

Love & prayers to you, Pixie!

  5. Trained as in unintentionally. As in because she wasn't ridden out in most of her races, because Calvin has always geared her down in the stretch, because horses are smarter than apparently you think they are...SHE THINKS when she gets in the stretch, and passes any horses in front of her, she's done racing. Get it now? Obviously Asmussen and Blasi aren't actually training her to slow down in the stretch. LMFAO

  6. That still makes no sense. Why would the owner and trainer of a supposedly $10 million dollar horse have a jockey who doesn't ride her to win a race? You think these people don't know any better? Has it ever occurred to you that she was simply too tired in the stretch to "run it out?" She is one of the greatest fillies ever, but even the great ones sometimes didn't run great races.
